Why write a story about a girl who plays baseball?

When my character first told me she was a girl who played baseball, my husband gave me a strange look. "In this day and age," he said, "do women and girls really have a hard time playing baseball?"

It was a good question. And for a minute or two I was hoping he was right and I was wrong. He was wrong.

Just watch this YouTube video and you'll see what I mean. It starts off on a positive note, announcing that the first female pitcher is playing pro in the US. Then listen for yourself to see where it goes.

So what are your thoughts about this video? I know what Sam would think.

  1. Boo!! That is so wrong, I especially hated the other guy's comment - "Are THEY even allowed to do that!!" Having three daughters I hope that one day things change. What about women's soccer? The US team performs better than the men's. Why should other sports be any different?

Wow, what century are we living in now?!
Hopefully your book will inspire young girls to follow their passions whatever they are.

    1. I agree, Katrina. I don't know what kind of program this is, but you would think he would have tried to show some kind of constraint. Sadly, this is not the first person I heard with this kind of attitude. When I called the baseball camp I used as the setting for part of my story and asked if I could register the girl, I thought he was going to have a heart attack. He couldn't say no, but he kept finding ways to get me to change my mind. "You know they sleep here, right?"

  2. I'm just trying to figure out which century we're living in... Some people didn't get the memo.

Can't wait for your book to come out and make some waves.

  4. So let me get this straight: Women can run for president, serve in the U.S. army, become firefighters (although that's a battle, too), be brain surgeons, tri-athletes, astronauts, etc... but they can't play baseball with the big boys. Oh. Ok. Just so long as I understand what these geniuses are saying.
