Each week I try to join Jen from Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee and Ricki from Unleashing Readers to share all of the reading I've done over the week from picture books to young adult novels. It's #IMWAYR!
Last week my class started a mock Caldecott unit. We spent the first week learning about the Caldecott Medal and looking at past winners. While students were learning, I was gathering books. Here are 12 of our 13 nominees:
We are also are looking at Ada's Violin but since I couldn't find a physical copy of the book, we explored it together:
What do you think of our nominees? What books do you think the committee should consider for the Caldecott?
What do you think of our nominees? What books do you think the committee should consider for the Caldecott?
We are in the middle of our Mock Season too. It's so fun to closely read with the criteria in mind. I would love to be "in the room where it happens" and hear the conversations!
ReplyDeleteReturn is such a beautiful book. I haven't read everything on your list, but of the ones I've read, that would be my pick!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katie, I adore Return and all of his other books. Doing a mock Caldecott is always a feast for the eyes.
ReplyDeleteLate last year I collected Becker's trilogy and read them together. I think I went through them at least 3 times before I was close to satisfied. I never seemed to find time to do a mock caldecott when I was in the library, although we did other kinds of pb evaluations.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Ada's Violin - I already borrowed quite a few of the titles you have in your Mock Caldecott from the library - will try to find others during the weekend.
ReplyDeleteOur fifth graders are doing a Mock Caldecott and I see a few of our titles on your list. We have read They All Saw a Cat, Ideas Are All Around, Coyote Moon, Thunderboy Jr., and Return. We have We Found a Hat, Be a Friend, and several more on our list too.
ReplyDeleteI was looking for They All Saw a Cat but couldn't find it. I haven't seen Coyote Moon. I will have to add it to my #classroombookaday list once we are finished.
